SINGAPORE - Forget swiping left or right - a group of adventurous Singaporean singles are taking matchmaking to new heights with an exclusive four-day trip to Japan, inspired by the hit Korean reality show Single's Inferno.
In this real-life romantic experiment, five women and five men who've never met will share a villa, bonding over yacht excursions, Osaka adventures, and cultural activities like tea ceremonies in Nara. The catch? They won't see each other's photos beforehand.
"We wanted to keep the surprise element alive," explains 24-year-old Leo Ching Ling, co-founder of Until 1111 events. "This creates authentic first impressions beyond physical appearances." Participants pay $1,111 for what organizers promise will be "core memory" experiences with relationship potential.
The New Era of Offline Matchmaking
Across Singapore, creative entrepreneurs are reinventing dating culture with experiential events that put apps to shame:
Plus One Mixers: Founders Lim Yun Qian and Lynette Kee (both 29) combine game-show energy with curated matchmaking. Their signature "Bingo challenge" gets strangers completing fun tasks together while their "single pitch" competition lets friends play Cupid.
Fishbowl Pitch Nights: Modeled after Shark Tank but for romance! Attendees create PowerPoint presentations pitching their single friends' best qualities. Three events have already sparked several promising connections among the millennial crowd.
Numerology Mixers: Until 1111 blends mysticism with mingling through tarot readings and personalized crystal-making sessions where compatibility numbers determine matches.
Why It Works When Apps Fail
"App interactions feel disposable," shares a 30-year-old content strategist who found friendship at Plus One mixers. "These events let you experience someone's energy before judging." Others praise how activities naturally break the ice better than awkward chat openers.
The secret sauce? Careful curation:
Ticketed entry ensures serious participants only (no casual window-shoppers)
"Plus one" policies help introverts feel comfortable bringing wingmen/women
Capped attendance (typically under50) prevents overwhelming crowds
